The wise, use a butter knife

Oh the things you can do with a butter knife! I have been using a butter knife for years the same way my mom did, to butter bread! Then, i saw my mom use it as a screw driver, hmm...that will do in a pinch. Today, as I was trying to open the DVD door that was stuck, I called for the trusty old butter knife again. A butter knife is awesome and these are the uses i have found for it...
1. a screwdriver
2. a drawer or door opener
3.to clean out hard to reach cracks
4. to butter bread
5. learning to juggle....
6. hard to reach scratch (gross, I know)
7.letter opener

What purposes have you found for a butter knife, they are versatile and everyone has at least one?

Vacation Time

Are you like me? Do you look at the winter season in anticipation of the fun you are going to have on your summer vacation?
I just wanted to include a few possible ideas for summer vacations:
1. Disneyland
I know this is a big trip but it is maybe more affordable than you think. On our first trip to the Magic Kingdom, we camped and went ot the park for 2 days, the beach, Universal studios and ate out 2 times. This was a little pricey but Wow! we had fun. as a result we are planning another trip in Feb 2011. It is only going to cost around $3000, and we are staying in a hotel (2 suites). That also includes food and gas and an ice cream each (4.50x17)! Not too bad quite honestly. We are even thinking of adding another day to our plans.
2. Camping
Is there anything that creates more memories than camping together. It is fun to bond over a shared rainy day or a hike that ended up being too long. I am not to fond of camping but boy, we sure have fun when we go. They kids love a good bedtime story and hearing stories about when Mom and Dad were young.
3. Staycation
Stay at home and enjoy each other. What is more fun? We went to local free museums, took tours of free places, visited many things we hadn't seen before, had a picnic bug hunt day, went to the dollar theater, we had the kids order their breakfast (it was great fun!) We were so busy and we had the luxury of sleeping in our own rooms every night and keeping up on our laundry!
4. A big Vacation one year, a small the next
We created a big jar that the kids are adding money too for our big vacation coming up next year. The kids are helping to save which is very cool. we save for a year then we can go on a bigger vacation. We already have our big vacations planned for the next couple of years.
The point of a vacation is to have fun and enjoy your family. That is going to be different for everyone. It shouldn't be stressful or create more work for anyone. I make our meals ahead of time and just reheat food in a microwave. We eat well too, breakfast burritos, pancakes, good lunches and snacks, and great dinners.

Christmas fever

It is so hard to be budget conscious at Christmas for me. I always try the three presents rule but always end up doing a bigger Christmas. It seems like there are so many needs of my children especially at this time of year. So, might I suggest a few ideas to get into the Christmas spirit without going overboard or over budget...
1. Set your price limit and DON'T deviate!
2. My kids love getting there very own box of cereal for Christmas so, consider cheaper fun alternatives that will quickly become your quirky traditions.
3. Keep it simple...
4. We are trying secret service this year. Everyone drew names to do service for, until Christmas.
5. You are never too old for a pair of pajama pants.
6. Not everyone needs a gift, some of the best gifts are a kind letter to a family member or the sharing of a holiday memory.
7. Go caroling and christmas light watching (I love to hear the oohs and ahhs over light shows in the neighborhood).
8. Remember what we are celebrating and why we are celebrating. It's not about Santa and presents..put some real meaning into Christmas.
9. Come up with easy traditions that can be carried out for the next 50 years like, a special food, game or getting new pajamas on Christmas Eve.
10. Know that no matter what Christmas is a time to enjoy not stress over, relax, have a glass of hot chocolate and share a secret smile when you see another shopper who is harried and stressed out looking.

Grandma Irene's Sugar Titans

I know it has been a long time since I have blogged but I hope you are sticking with me. I have decided to add my Grandma's sugar cookies. Grandma isn't doing well these days and can't even speak. This makes me so sad but I am glad this recipe will live on through me and my kids. This is a great Christmas tradition to make sugar cookies with your kids. They can help you in so many ways. Adding sprinkles, helping to roll out, helping to cut them out with cookie cutters are great ways to include your little ones. My Grandma made these every Christmas! I loved them especially the Christmas Trees...
Grandma Irene's Sugar Cookies
1 C Butter
1 1/2 C powdered Sugar
1 egg
1 tsp vanilla
2 1/2 C flour
1 tsp Baking soda
1 tsp cream of tarter
1/4 tsp salt
Cream butter and gradually add sugar until fluffy. add egg and vanilla beat well. add dry ingredients blending until creamed. divide and chill several hours. roll out in 1/2" thick. bake 6 min at 400 degrees. then make a powdered sugar frosting.

Good luck!!!

California here we come...

John and I are on our way to California on Thursday. We are so excited but we get into this rut of starting to worry right before leaving. We are flying to Long Beach then picking up our rental. then, on to Disneyland!! Everyone assures us that we will have a great time without the kids there. We will see. Then, Friday morning we will go to San Diego temple for a wedding then back to Disney. Saturday we will swim in the pool, go to santa Monica Pier and then the wedding reception at 6pm. On Sunday morning, we will be flying back home. I am just hoping I didn't cram too much fun in our relaxing get away.
Our wonderful friends, the whitakers and dastrups, are going to be holding down the fort while we are gone. I am glad that most of the kids will be in school for 2 of the 3 days we will be gone. Now, I just need to get to work finishing the meals, laundry, and the various cleaning I feel like I have to do.
I took my science test today and it was a train wreck!! I get the score in the morning. We will see...
Everyone is hanging in there. We had a fun movie afternoon since there was no school today. We watched Monsters Vs. Aliens, ate popcorn and red vines. It was so fun. Well, on to dinner and a great Family Night. I love Mondays and the opportunity that we have to be taught from each other. Family Home Evening, ROCKS! Hope your week will prove to be as fun as ours.
